  10:00 Diane Frankel, Program Officer of the James Irvine Foundation of California and former Director, Institute of Museum and Library Services. Frankel will speak about the Museum Youth Initiative, a program she began that provides support to select museums in California for capacity building and programming to educate youth during out-of-school hours.

Diane Frankel is the Program Director in Children, Youth and Families of the James Irvine Foundation of California, and architect of the Foundation's Museum Youth Initiative. From 1994 to 1999, she was Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a Presidential appoint ment. Prior to this she was Director of the Bay Area Discovery Museum, and Director of the J.F.K. Center for Museum Studies. She has been active in the museum profession internationally for over 30 years.

Hear how The Contemporary Museum and Hawaii Opera Theatre worked together with school children at Waiau Elementary School. As a group, the children formed a theatrical back drop for HOT’s October 2001 production of L’Enfant et les Sortilèges.

Learn more about Bishop Museum’s partnership with Nanaikapono Community School Museum, a hands-on Hawaiian cultural museum of Nanaikapono Elementary School in Nanakuli.

  1:45 Lahaina interpretive plan
Keoki Freeland, will share his first hand experience regarding the development and implementation of the Lahaina Interpretive Plan. This unique collaboration between four organizations, Lahaina Restoration Foundation, The Friends of Moku'ula, Hui O Wa'a Kaulua and Lahaina Town Action Committee, resulted in interpretive signage for the historic sites of Lahaina. Freeland will talk about the process the organizations are going through to make their master plan a reality.

Mayor Harris will share a slide show presentation on Kahi Hali‘a Aloha, the award winning improvements of the Kalakaua Promenade and the developments at Hanauma Bay.

Hear how three organizations are collaborating to achieve their common goal of furthering a Hawaiian presence in the visitor industry. Presented by, Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association, Kapi‘olani Community College and Bishop Museum at Kalia.

Dr. Brown will talk about current and future plans for the Bishop Museum.

Bob Buss - Program Officer, Hawai‘i Council for the Humanities
Buss will give an update on the Preserving Hawai‘i’s heritage grantline. Preservation grants assist museum, archives and historical societies to index preserve and make more available to the public important parts of their collections. In addition two new grantlines will be discussed, assistance for publications and research.

  1:00  Opening Soon! New Museums in Hawai‘i

shangri-La
Overlooking the sea on Diamond Head, Shangri-La was the home of tobacco heiress Doris Duke. The stunning architecture and collection of Islamic art is currently under renovation and conserva- tion in preparation for the grand opening to the public this coming fall. Moore will share slides and stories of preparing this home for the public.

Washington Place
With construction beginning on the Governor’s new home, the State has unveiled a plan to convert Washington Place into a museum and gallery. Currently home to Hawaii’s governor, this 156 year- old house was once home to Liliuokalani, Hawai‘i's last queen. Jim Bartels, will speak about renovation plans and the vision of Washington Place for the future.

Hawai’i State Art Museum
Across from Washington Place at the historic Armed Forces YMCA building is the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts' Hawai'i State Art Museum scheduled to open in early November. Renovations to the second floor will create 12,000 square feet of gallery space for exhibitions of works of art from Art in Public Places Collection. Lisa Yoshihara will speak of ongoing renovations, exhibition plans and the future vision.
