Shangri La is the five acre Islamic-style residence of heiress Doris Duke (1912 - 1993). Situated on the oceanfront with commanding views of Diamond Head, the estate is designed and furnished throughout with art work and built-in architectural features from Iran, Syria, Morocco, Turkey, and India. One of Hawai’i’s most architecturally significant homes, Shangri La was built between 1936 - 1939 and features one of the largest collections of Islamic art in the United States.

Collections: Islamic artwork, household furnishings and built-in architectural features from Iran, Syria, Morocco, Turkey and India; landscaped gardens, terraces and water features; personal effects and archives; main house, playhouse and caretaker’s cottage (1936–38), designed by architect Marion Sims Wyeth

Programs and tours: Tours originate at the Honolulu Academy of Arts with a 10 minute orientation video and a visit to the exhibition Arts of the Islamic World. Groups of 12 are transported to Shangri La by minivan where they tour the public rooms of the main house and portions of the grounds and gardens, learning about Islamic art and culture, the house and site and Doris Duke as a collector.

Special events: Through a grant from the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, the Honolulu Academy of Arts offers periodic exhibitions, lectures, film series and other programs on Islamic art and culture.

Facilities: Wheelchair accessible. People in wheelchairs should call (808) 532-3685 to make arrangements for transportation and parking at least one week in advance of scheduled tour time.
