Culture Educator – Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum

The Culture Educator delivers culture-based programming to school groups, community groups, and general public at Bishop Museum. In conjunction with other educators, he/she serves as a cultural content resource in the development, delivery, and evaluation of museum programs, exhibits, and special events. He/she oversees public exhibit spaces in the Hawaiian Hall Complex, supporting the Museum’s volunteer docents and interacting with museum guests.

Qualifications

  • College degree or equivalent in experience in relevant field.
  • Specialized knowledge in Hawaiian culture, history, and practice required.
  • Strong verbal communication skills required.
  • Strong written communication skills highly desired.
  • Must be able to handle multiple projects while maintaining composure.
  • Must be flexible, patient, and diplomatic.
  • Must be a strong collaborator and supportive team member.
  • Must enjoy working with children, families, and general public.
  • Experience in informal education (i.e. museum, zoo, etc.) highly desired.
  • Experience in formal education (i.e. classroom teaching) highly desired.
  • Experience in traditional performing arts (i.e. hula, oli, hana keaka, etc.) highly desired.
  • Experience in traditional arts (i.e. weaving, carving, featherwork, etc.) highly desired.
  • Must have strong organizational skills.
  • Solutions-oriented, diplomatic problem solver and true team player.

Salary: $32,000 – $35,000/year
Hours: 
Full-time; some evening and weekend hours required.
