Manager of Human Resources – Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum

The Manager of Human Resources is responsible for overseeing the Museum’s human resources program, under the supervision of the Corporate Counsel and with the support of the Museum’s HR partner, Simplicity HR.  Duties include staff and volunteer recruitment and retention, staff and volunteer relations, training and workforce development, oversight of the annual performance review process, maintenance of personnel records and procedures; managing the onboarding process for new hires, and developing and administering company policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities Include: 

  • Manage all orientation and onboarding processes for volunteers, interns, and employees.
  • Manage internal communications for all HR-related matters.
  • Maintain employee Recognition program, including annual staff and volunteer recognition events. Facilitate programs to boost staff morale.
  • Manage user access to employee and volunteer databases (HR Symphony, Volgistics, and ALTRU).
  • Prepare, recommend, and maintain records and procedures for controlling personnel transactions and reporting personnel data.
  • Work with HR Simplicity to manage benefits administration.
  • Work with HR Simplicity to manage payroll systems.
  • Coordinate and/or conduct exit interviews to determine reasons behind separation for all exiting employees.
  • Maintain volunteer database including reporting on volunteer activity, contacting inactive volunteers and communicating with department supervisors to maintain accurate records.
  • Maintain Intranet as well as HR sections of the Bishop Museum public website.
  • Coordinate volunteer coverage for museum events as requested by other departments.
  • Responsible for Museum compliance with Federal and State legislation pertaining to all personnel matters.
  • Act as EEO / Affirmative Action Officer for Museum to ensure compliance by Museum and contractors/subcontractors.
  • Work with HR Simplicity to manage unemployment, TDI, and workers compensation claims and assist departments with appeals.
  • Manage administration of the Museum’s 401k and pension plans.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years of experience in Human Resources.
  • SHRM certification preferred.
  • General knowledge of the principles and practices of personnel administration.
  • Knowledge of the organization and operations of administrative programs.
  • Ability to develop long-term plans and programs and to evaluate work accomplishments.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; able to work with diverse groups of people.
  • Excellent time management skills; able to manage multiple projects and tasks under time constraints.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to accomplish tasks/goals of the department
  • Solutions oriented, diplomatic problem solver and true team player.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other management staff, employees, and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding all sensitive project and organizational information.
  • Proficiency with MS Office software suite including Word, Excel and PowerPoint; knowledge of payroll software (HR Simplicity preferred); experience with WordPress desired.

Other Requirements

  • Flexibility in working hours, as some evening and weekend work is required.
  • Must have own car with proof of insurance and valid Hawai‘i Drivers License.
  • Organized, analytical, and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to manage multiple ongoing projects with little supervision.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English clearly and proficiently.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with others.
  • Professional, business-like appearance and demeanor.
  • Familiarity with Hawaiian or Pacific culture and history a plus.
